I got a lot of use out of this music book over the holidays and overall I am happy with it. I would call the arrangements intermediate to early advanced and are nicely done. I do wish that this (and every music book) were spiral bound - it's difficult to keep the book open when playing so I ended up making a copy of each song to use when needed for a performance. Also, this does not include chords, which would allow a pianist to play "fake book" style and learn the songs more quickly. But that is just a personal preference. But I have enjoyed playing from the book and the arrangements are nicely done.
This is a wonderful collection of pieces for the intermediate pianist, and I sent copies to other family members for the holidays. The arrangements are lovely and nearly sight-readable, which is great when you're a church musician and need to cover a lot of Advent/Christmas services. My only caveat, and it's a big one: the book doesn't lie flat, and it's so thick that it's hard to keep it open even when using a couple of hymnals. Definitely doesn't work for page turns. What I had to do was photocopy everything. Hope they correct this problem and reissue the book.
These aren’t advanced arrangements.I’d categorize them as upper intermediate, at best.I’d you’re looking for truly advanced arrangements, I recommend any of the advanced level, Mark Hayes Christmas books.
The book was just delivered. I've only played Joy to the World. The song plays well. I'm sure the other songs sound just as nice but I wanted to comment that my 4-star rating is due to there not being lyrics. I was really looking forward to playing and singing. Here is a photo of the first page of Joy to the World so that you can judge for yourself the complexity of the arrangement and see that there are no lyrics. I'd absolutely recommend this book to anyone if you don't mind not having the lyrics.
I'm enjoying most of these arrangements. But some are not at the said level. They are too easy and should be more complicated. To use this book I had to take it apart. The binding is stiff. Dan Coates' arrangements are the most exciting that have come along in quite awhile. I originally gave this review FOUR stars but because the product is PRINTED the in the USA I changed it to the five stars. Yeah for productivity!
One of the best collections of Christmas music advanced piano solos available. The Mozart-like arrangement of "Deck the Halls" is outstanding. Dan Coates has outdone himself with this work.
I have been playing piano for many years, and these pieces are quite interesting but very short. Most of the Christmas Hymns are the length of one stanza and playing time is barely over a minute. The harmonization is good and the arrangements are nice but they really aren't long enough to use for solos, except for a couple. If you are play on the level of someone who has studied 3 or 4 years you shouldn't have any problem playing any of these with just a little practice.
I'm classically trained for 12+ years but have taken a nearly 10 year hiatus from practice. Wanting to get back into practicing, I picked up this book for the holidays. Though I'm a bit rusty I was able to sight read these arrangements, and they will sound great with more polishing. Very cool and jazzy arrangments that aren't too difficult but still impressive.
