Following the fatal shooting in broad daylight of unarmed African American Michael Brown by a white cop in August 2014, Ferguson, Missouri, became the scene of protests that pitted law enforcement against locals and Black Lives matter activists. The media firestorm has not waned, and, in fact, has grown stronger in light of all the recent violence by and against police officers nationwide. According to Ferguson's former police chief Tom Jackson, the uninformed media actually fans the flames of unrest and exploits the situation: infotainment optics have become more important than truth, while social media spreads the news without providing context. Policing Ferguson, Policing America is the book that finally tells the inside story of what happened in Ferguson, and how good guys became the bad guys through media and political distortion.
Pressure is at a boiling point. In 2016, America has been rocked by heart-wrenching fatal shootings of African Americans by police officers in Louisiana and in Minnesota, and by the shootings of police officers in Dallas, Baton Rouge, and Kansas City that left 11 officers dead and a dozen more wounded. To many Americans, the central theme of this continuing bloody story is one of racial injustice and out-of-control policing.

I grew up in the Metro-East area and my brother-in-law worked in Ferguson while this rioting occurred. So, a delayed thank you to Chief Jackson and his officers, all officers and personnel, who helped keep him safe. While watching and reading the coverage of this event, I keep sensing that the DOJ was the sinister aspect, not Darren Wilson or the police. This book by Chief Jackson lays it all out simply and completely. The extent that the Obama administration, via Eric Holder, railroaded a whole community (really communities) is insane, illegal, immoral, and flat out evil. The blatant lies and distorted facts are clearly called out by the chief...a chief who also is humble and admits his own mistakes in the matter. Anyone wanting to be a First Responder should read this book and understand what you are up against. Tom Jackson took everything they threw at him and is still standing tall and proud...he will be remembered.
An honest, engaging, eye-opening insight of the truth behind what actually happen in Ferguson 2014. It's one thing to see it on tv, but another to relive it through the author's words.Update: I've given my review a lot of thought since I posted. It is, indeed, hard to put down. It was an emotional book to read, in parts, because of a personal connection I have to many, many, many of the officers, and other necessary personnel that were required to that were there for one service or another for our officers, for the "peaceful" daytimes and the turbulent nighttimes. My personal connection to not only those officers, but the citizens of Ferguson, who call that town their home. The businesses that were what provided many citizens of the area a livelihood, as well as services, that were destroyed by people who had no business (except their own gain) to be there wrecking havoc in the first place. Please remember that ALL LIVES MATTER, but most especially our THIN BLUE LINES! Please BACK THE BLUE!
I was a police officer in Jennings, which shares a border with Ferguson. That department always had a great reputation, so it was unbelievable to me to hear the lies spewed forth by the media and the DOJ. Turns out, I was right not to believe any of it. The book is really well written and easy to read. I couldn't put it down.
This is the book for anyone who wants to know the real story of the events of August 9, 2014 and the aftermath. I have been a resident of Ferguson, MO for over forty years and I remember the incidences, video and reporting like it happened yesterday. I had always thought the media did their best to provide accurate and truthful reporting. The media reports from Ferguson during and after the riots were outrageous, biased examples of irresponsible journalism. If you think you got the real story...you didn't, until now. As Paul Harvey would say, "Now for the rest of the story". Chief Jackson sets the record straight and it is a markedly different story than you got from the DOJ report on Ferguson. I am in awe of Chief Jackson that he was able to perform his duties so well in the face of the massive, insurmountable forces working against him. Hands up! Don't shoot! was and still is a lie. It never happened. The City of Ferguson, Chief Jackson, Officer Darren Wilson and the members of the Ferguson Police Department have been unjustly demonized by those with their own personal agendas.Thank you Chief Jackson, this is the book I needed.
I was there! This book accurately described what really happened there and explained the many factors commanders had to consider before any decisions were made. I highly recommend this book to all open minded readers who want to know the truth about the Ferguson riots.
Disclosure: I'm the photographer who supplied the photos for the book. That being said, I didn't personally know Tom Jackson before supplying the photos. I have a unique perspective on what happened in Ferguson and this is a great book. As a long time Ferguson resident and a photojournalist who covered the protests I was in the middle of this. This book confirmed what I and many other residents felt, that the media was lying and decisions about what was being done in our community was coming from out of town.If all you know about the Ferguson protests is what you saw on the national news, then you don't know anything about what really happened. Having lived and worked through it, I didn't know all that was going on and was pleased to see Tom Jackson write a truthful account of what was going on behind the scenes.
I was formerly a Federal Investigator and lived in the St. Louis Area during the mid 1960s and visited Ferguson numerous times. At that time Ferguson was a very nice, peaceful city, but bordered the Northern part of the City of St. Louis that was already very troubled by high crime in the Cook, Cass and Cole Street areas and other areas further East such as the Pruitt-Igoe Public Housing. Apparently, people from the Northern part of St. Louis moved into Ferguson to get away from the crime and violence of St. Louis. Chief Jackson has written an excellent account of the violence that arose from the Michel Brown shooting, of the mishandling of the violent reaction caused by the biased media and politicians. The US AG Eric Holder was probably the most despicable of all of the politicians that purposely lied to the public and purposely misled the country. If there was a true racist in this unfortunate story it is Holder. I doubt that Ferguson will ever recover from the wounds inflicted by the Media and Holder's DOJ. Jackson and the Ferguson PD did as good a job as possible under the circumstances. This book should be required reading for all law enforcement, particularly those in Management.
